This «Azimuth» issue, devoted to the history, uses, and implications of psychedelic substances, seeks to advance research and philosophical debate on hallucinogenic experiences, their medical and psychological applications, and their broader cultural and ethical dimensions. Over the past decade, a remarkable resurgence of interest in psychedelics – often referred to as the Psychedelic Renaissance – has transformed both scientific inquiry and public discourse. Once marginalized, psychedelic studies have re-emerged as a vibrant interdisciplinary field, spanning pharmacology, neuroscience, psychology, phenomenology, and philosophy. Scientific research has thus expanded on multiple fronts: pharmacology elucidates the molecular mechanisms of these compounds; neuroscience examines their effects on brain circuits; and psychology investigates the subjective dimensions of the psychedelic experience – dimensions that often prove decisive for clinical outcomes. The intersection of these perspectives defines a new epistemic space where biological, experiential, and ethical dimensions of human transformation converge.

For some time the renowned view of the strict Rhine/Danube division between phenomenology and analytic philosophy has been witnessing a form of liberalization. Indeed, from embodiment-oriented critical turning points onwards, analytic philosophy merged into a more inclusive trend of scientific philosophy (Leitgeb 2013), encompassing mathematical, computational, and experimental methods, while traditional phenomenology experiences across-the-board post-phenomenological reflections, focusing on human/machine relations and technological mediation. Although the relationship between phenomenology and analytic philosophy has been quite an explored issue, the overall bearing of embodiment on contemporary philosophy needs an appropriate meta-philosophical assessment. This issue of Azimuth aims to fill this gap, fostering reflection on embodiment from a meta-philosophical point of view. All the more, this endeavour is compelling for the topic of embodiment steeply increases in complexity and diversification. Touching on relevant debated subjects, such as those of personal identity, gender theory, social theory, and neurosciences – to mention only some, embodiment stimulates discussions among scholars from different philosophical orientations.

Critical Care explores the paradoxical and ambivalent aspects of care — of the ways that it implies both flourishing and repression, embrace and exclusion, and pricelessness and worthlessness. Further, care in one realm often implies carelessness in another. This special issue examines these tensions within the field of care studies, considering how the provision of care can discipline normative values about appropriate modes, objects, and practices. Today, inequalities of care are normalized, and many care practices are unsustainable ecologically, socially, culturally, and economically (e.g., Benería 2008, Damamme, et al. 2017, Fraser 2016, R. Parreñas 2002; Razavi 2011). Solutions to the crisis of care have centered principally on state-, market-, and technology-centered approaches, but addressing this crisis demands a more thoroughgoing interrogation of human values, including developing shared understandings of the very concepts of care and its value.

Phenomenology and pragmatism constitute two major contemporary philosophical traditions, whose historical and theoretical entanglements have long been the subject of study and critical attention. This issue of Azimuth aims to focus on a number of theoretical issues around which the intersection between the two traditions is played out today from a perspective that transcends scholastic and geographical boundaries and the topic of reception itself. In particular, the problem – which has always remained central to phenomenology since Husserl’s late philosophy – of the ante-predicative, the pre-categorical, the aesthetic and sensible (extra-logical) foundation of logical-conceptual thought constitutes the most fruitful theoretical knot for a declination of phenomenology in the pragmatist sense (i.e., of pragmatism in the phenomenological sense). At the center of this issue, therefore, are the lines of convergence on the axis of the theory of perception and sensation, which, moreover, constitute the premises of the different meanings of truth, evidence, and judgment in the two traditions.

Digital infospace is intertwined with the lives of each of us with no actual discontinuity. Its epistemic dynamics are immediately part of social discourse. This is exactly why the urgency to confront such a problem arises, today, for any epistemology that wants to contribute to a critical engagement with our shared present. A good starting point for this inquiry is the confusion, frequent in social discourse, between epistemic bubbles and echo chambers. An epistemic bubble is a social epistemic structure that excludes other relevant epistemic sources. It can constitute itself by sheer environmental dynamics, resulting from the accidental cumulation of knowledge and its segregation from external interferences. An echo chamber is instead a social epistemic structure that actively excludes and discredits other relevant epistemic sources. It works towards this exclusion and in the interest of the epistemic agents who promote it. Both are prominent architectural features of the digital infospace that seamlessly influence the general space of knowledge. Questions regarding their structural character, their differences, the role they assign to truth and epistemic agents, and what the virtuous epistemic agent could or should do with respect to those issues are the focus of this issue of Azimuth.

From its founding in 2013 to the present, Azimuth has played a role in mapping contemporary philosophical debate on a variety of topics, revolving around three key thematic areas: philosophy of technology, aesthetics & politics, and the history of ideas and cultures. The overall research and editorial intent have been to investigate the way in which philosophical reflection intersected and confronted with those other forms of knowledge that, in each of these areas, are decisive for a critical understanding of phenomena. Ten years after the beginning of the publication, the critical landscape that Azimuth has drawn can be weighed and evaluated in relation to the present and the way philosophy continues to articulate itself in the thematic and institutional confrontation with other forms of knowledge. What did the progressive hybridization with disciplines whose methodologies are often radically different from the philosophical one mean for philosophy in the last ten years? Which methodological transformations have become necessary? With respect to which specific problems within the indicated macro-areas is the philosophical contribution recognized as pivotal by scholars of other disciplines? What does it mean to “do philosophy”, to “practice philosophy” in a historical and cultural horizon of growing complexity and interconnection like the present one?

The notion of ‘immersivity’ is a pivotal element in the description of technologically mediated experience, designating an inherent quality of objects, spaces and more generally situations able to produce an impression of immersion. Different from the notion of ‘immersion’ itself – which describes «a process of reception» focusing on sensations and feelings of the subject of experience – «immersivity designates a process of production» (Freitag et alii, 2020). The issue pays a special attention to the conditions of possibility, both material and immaterial, of immersive experiences: technologies, environments, materials, practices, but also theoretical, ideological and political frames. At the same time, it aims at exploring some theoretical questions that are still open in the debate on immersive experience, in the digital environments as well as in other contexts. In order to do so, different and complementary philosophical approaches to the question of immersivity are combined, coming from multiple philosophical disciplines, such as: aesthetics, material and critical historicism coupled with a genealogical approach, philosophical anthropology, phenomenology and post-phenomenology, cognitive science (4E cognition), and deconstructionism.

The present issue discusses the uses, opportunities and misuses of the recent evolutionary research program when approaching key issues in contemporary philosophical thought. One aim of the current issue is to illustrate past and current avenues of productive dialogue between biology – evolutionary biology, in particular – and philosophy. Further, the issue investigates what the evolutionary conceptual and empirical repertoire can teach us about life and human nature conundrums and which interpretative paths, previously left unexplored by classic philosophical approaches, arise from such perspective. Never as in contemporary philosophical debates, the Darwinian perspective emerged as a vital tool or, in John Dewey’s words, as “the greatest dissolvent in contemporary thought of old questions, the greatest precipitant of new methods, new intentions, new problems”.

The term “diaspora” is situated in a field of tension between identities and otherness, stability and migration. Today, exile still represents a political and philosophical challenge to the local needs of the nation-state, which must define its borders in order to exercise control. Galut, exile or movement, belongs to the Jewish tradition, not only from a historical but also from a theological perspective. In this issue, the connection between homeland, identity and mother-tongue will be analyzed within the framework of 20th-century Jewish thought, namely through the reflections of relevant thinkers such as Franz Rosenzweig, Margarete Susman, Hannah Arendt, Elias Canetti, Jacques Derrida, Vilem Flusser, Paul Celan, and Edmond Jabes. In the Jewish tradition, language becomes a substitute for the lost homeland, the missing mother, and the homeland. By contrast to belonging to a concrete country, the homeland in this case mainly consists of a body of texts, a language, and a cultural tradition. Thus, we are concerned here with an abstract heritage that is not connected with any territorial delimitation.

The main purpose of this issue is to develop a genealogical and critical approach to populist theories and practices. We propose to analyze the historical emergency, within the last two centuries, of processes of democratization that lead to different forms of conceiving and theorizing the people and its emancipation. Particularly, we aim to critically engage with the broad spectrum of post-Marxist and post-structuralist theories that, since the groundbreaking work of Ernesto Laclau, have further extended his intellectual legacy. To question this philosophical-political framework should produce an enlargement of the ways of understanding and enacting current democratic challenges, beyond the spectrum of populism.
